Check out the latest stories about Android netbooks in the news today
This week, Google came out with its earnings reports. Even though earnings were down a bit, they are optimistic moving forward. Regarding Android on netbooks, Google believes that Android is going to have a very very strong year. “There are announcements happening between now and end of the year – with operator partners. On the netbook side, a number of people have ported it over netbook and similar devices. That’s the benefit of the open source model.”
Also, as reported recently, HP is considering using Android, and is testing it on a new line of netbooks, although we don’t know for certain if and when HP Android netboooks will be commercially available. Satjiv Chachil, HP’s PC division vice president stated:
“We want to assess the capability Android may have for the computer and communications industries, so we are studying it.”
The Register reported that Asus may release an Android netbook within the next 12 months. Dell is believed to be working on an Android smartphone.
Android was primarily designed for cellphones, but with the idea that it might be extended to other mobile devices such as navigation systems. Netbooks would likely be the most powerful machines to run the system.
HP isn’t giving much indication of its plans with Android, saying only that it wants to “understand all of the OS choices in the marketplace that might be used by our competitors, or that might possibly be of value to our customers too.” Besides the possibility for better performance at particular tasks, another advantage of a system like Android in netbooks is its price. In cheaper machines like netbooks, Windows makes up a much higher percentage of its cost. By using Android, manufacturers will be allowed to make price cuts while keeping more profit. Netbooks with Linux operating systems are considerably cheaper than the similar Windows versions.
